How to prepare for the BBO
What to study, the materials that help most, and a realistic path from a solid A-level base to olympiad-level biology.
The biology the BBO draws on
The BBO assumes a confident grasp of common A-level biology, then rewards students who can apply it to unfamiliar, topical problems. Build breadth across the core areas:
Molecular & cell biology
Biochemistry, cell structure, membranes, respiration and photosynthesis.
Genetics & evolution
Inheritance, molecular genetics, natural selection and phylogeny.
Physiology & ecology
Plant and animal physiology, anatomy, ecology and animal behaviour.
What helps most
Past papers & answer keys
The single most effective resource — the full 2010–2026 archive is free to download.

A comprehensive university-level text (for example, a standard general-biology textbook) is ideal for going beyond A-level depth.
Topic notes & vocabulary
Condensed notes on high-yield topics and key terminology speed up revision close to the exam.

Sit papers to the clock to build pace; the BBO’s two 45-minute papers reward quick, confident reasoning.
From A-level base to olympiad ready
Shore up the fundamentals
Make sure core A-level topics are solid — gaps show up quickly under exam pressure.
Read for breadth & depth
Go beyond the syllabus with a university-level text and topical biology reading.
Drill past papers
Work through the archive under timed conditions, then analyse weak topics with the answer keys.
Refine close to the exam
Use condensed notes and a vocabulary list to keep high-yield material sharp.
