BBO results & awards

What you can earn in the British Biology Olympiad, how score boundaries have been moving, and why strong results matter for university and the international stage.

Awards

Recognition designed to be reachable

Awards span Gold, Silver, Bronze, Highly Commended, Commended and Participation. The majority of participating schools receive at least one award each year — the BBO is built to encourage talent, not to ration recognition.

G

Gold

The top band — and the route toward UK team selection for the IBO.

S

Silver & Bronze

Excellent and strong performance, well above the cohort average.

+

Commended & Participation

Achievement worth celebrating, plus an e-certificate for every entrant.

Score boundaries

Boundaries have been rising

In recent years the score boundaries for each award have climbed, reflecting a stronger, larger field. That makes consistent, paper-based practice more important than ever.

The best way to gauge where you stand is to sit recent papers under timed conditions and compare your marks year on year. Download the past-paper archive →

Exact boundaries are set each year after the papers are sat and vary by cohort. We publish analysis in the news when each season’s boundaries are released.

Why it matters

What a strong BBO result can do

University applications

A recognised award is a credible signal for competitive biology, medicine and life-sciences courses.

The IBO pathway

Top performers are invited to UK team selection — and the chance to compete internationally.

Confidence & growth

Tackling olympiad-level problems stretches real biological thinking well beyond the syllabus.
