The BBO is not only one of the longest-running biology competitions for secondary school students in the United Kingdom, but also a highly valuable academic achievement for applicants to top universities such as the Ivy League and G5 institutions. Its awards are earned purely through performance. Now that the 2026 BBO score boundaries have been officially released, this article provides a full analysis of the exam, especially in light of the earlier test date and the changes in question volume and format. We also share the latest paper and a collection of past papers to support future preparation.

Questions 1 to 207 are true or false questions. Beginning with Question 208, composite question types are introduced, with the exact format determined by the question stem.

Analysis of the 2026 BBO Knowledge Distribution
Cell Biology, Genetics and Evolution, and Systematics were the three core sections, together accounting for more than 60 percent of the paper.
Experimental analysis and graph interpretation appeared throughout all sections, especially in topics such as phylogeny, enzyme activity, and genetic frequency.
The plant biology section remained relatively independent but stable in weight, with a particular focus on physiological adaptation and structure-function relationships.
Although Animal Behaviour accounted for a smaller share of the paper, its questions were mostly composite in format, requiring strong understanding and application.
Interdisciplinary questions continued to increase, reflecting the BBO’s shift toward assessing broader scientific literacy.

3. Analysis of the 2026 BBO Exam
Overall Summary
The 2026 BBO included a total of 296 questions and a total score of 316 marks. It tested not only students’ mastery of foundational knowledge, but also their reading speed and problem-solving efficiency. This was the largest paper in the past five years and set a new record.
The overall difficulty increased slightly. The exam tested knowledge in greater detail and with stronger internal structure, following a “section plus layered knowledge points” approach. This required students to have a solid and highly systematic biology knowledge framework.
There were many true or false questions, particularly from Questions 1 to 210. Students had to judge how different factors influenced biological processes based on conceptual understanding. However, the question stems relied more heavily on graphs and experimental data than before, which meant that students needed strong skills in rapid information extraction and logical reasoning.
The proportion of experimental analysis and graph interpretation questions increased noticeably. Examples included Questions 1 to 9 on enzyme activity curves, Questions 258 to 262 on membrane porosity experiments, and Questions 281 to 288 on phylogenetic tree construction. These questions placed higher demands on students’ scientific thinking and data interpretation ability.
Competition Trends
The BBO is placing greater emphasis on scientific inquiry skills. A large number of questions now require interpretation of experimental data and graphs, asking students to think more like scientists.
The trend toward interdisciplinary integration is becoming clearer, with biology increasingly combined with chemistry, physics, ecology, and mathematics.
The competition also places greater importance on building a coherent knowledge system. Students are expected to connect biological ideas across different levels, from the microscopic to the macroscopic, and to understand how genetic variation drives evolution at the population level. This reflects the highly systematic nature of biology as a discipline.
The question volume remains extremely high. The paper is still dominated by true or false questions, with a smaller number of multiple-choice, matching, and fill-in-the-blank questions. This continues to test students’ ability to extract information quickly, especially from figures and data.
