Review of the 2026 BBO Competition
The 2026 BBO Biology Competition score boundaries for the UK division have already been released. Because the number of questions nearly doubled compared with previous years, the cutoffs for all major awards increased significantly as well. This year, the total number of participants reached 18,800, more than 3,000 higher than last year, making competition even more intense.
The score boundaries for Gold, Silver, Bronze, Highly Commended, and Commended in the UK division can also serve as a useful reference for students in China. The Gold boundary corresponded to 71.99 percent of the total score, compared with 57.31 percent last year, representing a major increase.

The proportion of graph- and figure-based questions also increased noticeably. Most questions included visual materials such as graphs of enzyme activity or oxygen dissociation curves, structural diagrams such as coenzyme A or pectin cross-linking, schematic diagrams such as phylogenetic trees, and experimental data figures. Students were expected to interpret visual information quickly and explain the biological principles behind it.
Changes in Difficulty
The overall difficulty increased slightly.
The paper tested knowledge points in greater detail and with stronger system-level connections. Most sections followed a “section plus layered knowledge point” format, meaning students needed a solid and highly organized biology knowledge system.
There was also a clear trend toward interdisciplinary integration. Questions increasingly combined biology with chemistry, such as solvent properties, physics, such as porosity, ecology, such as environmental gradients, and mathematics, such as genetic frequency calculations.

Who Can Participate and How to Register
The competition is open to current high school students in Grades 9 to 12 worldwide, with no nationality restrictions. Students from public schools, international schools, and AP, IB, or A-Level systems are all eligible to participate.
The competition is especially suitable for students intending to apply to top universities in the United States or the United Kingdom in fields such as biological sciences, basic medicine, neuroscience, bioinformatics, and public health.
Registration must be completed through the ASDAN China official platform or authorized partner institutions. Individual registration is not permitted.
The competition may be held online or offline. For online exams, students must use a computer equipped with a camera to ensure exam integrity.
Exam Format
The exam is an individual written paper consisting of 50 multiple-choice questions. The total score is 50 points, and the exam lasts 50 minutes, which means students have an average of one minute per question.

Animal Anatomy and Physiology: 25 percent, the core high-scoring module
Cell Biology: 20 percent, including signaling pathways, gene regulation, and transmembrane transport

Global awards include Global Gold, Global Silver, Global Bronze, and Honorable Mention, which are determined according to the score distribution of participants worldwide.
China awards include National Gold, National Silver, National Bronze, and Regional Excellence Award. Official certificates are issued, and these awards are valid for both domestic admissions and overseas university applications.
